Suyao Tian featured in spring studio art gallery

Shelter studio art gallery promotes local Minnesota artists

When we designed the new Shelter studio at International Market Square (IMS), we wanted to have the ability to display the work of local artisans to showcase their talents and sell to a wider audience of clients and design professionals in the building. Artwork in our studio is now rotated twice annually, typically at the start of winter and spring. The Shelter studio gallery is comprised of artwork displayed throughout our workspace. Our winter 2023 exhibit featured works from Caitlin Lempia-Bradford (left) and Daren Henry (right) pictured below:

Suyao Tian

Suyao Tian is an artist, designer and independent curator residing in the Twin Cities. You may recognize her work that’s currently on display in the MSP international airport gallery and sold at Room&Board. Tian specializes in water-based media to create abstract, dreamlike paintings inspired by her upbringing as a single child during China’s one-child-only policy in the 80’s. She draws inspiration from childhood memories, nature, imagination, and subconscious thinking for her creations. Tian creates symbolic figures connected to other creatures, shapes, and unknown forms, developing an imaginative world where everything is interconnected and dependent on each other, with the entire world considered crucial.

The process of creation and the audience’s interpretation of her work holds more importance in the realm of free imagination, and the significance of her work lies in the “no specific meaning”. Tian’s belief that the audience has the right, and ability, to interpret the meaning of her artwork based on their own world experiences represents the essence of art and imagination itself.
