Luminary Arts Center honored with AIA Minneapolis 2024 Merit award

Shelter’s work on the renovation of the Luminary Arts Center has been recognized with an AIA Minneapolis Merit Award.

AIA Minneapolis awarded six recipients with the 2024 Merit Awards, an honor bestowed on projects designed by AIA designated Minneapolis architects that exemplify “excellence beyond design, emphasize public-interest design, and embrace the varied forces that shape a building”. The merit award program is judged each year by a jury made up of a business owner, a real estate professional, a community advocate, an academic leader, and an architect to ensure a broad spectrum of perspectives are included in decision making.

The Luminary Arts Center, located in the North Loop neighborhood of Minneapolis, is a newly rebranded performance space with 30-foot-high ceilings is carved out of the foundation of a historic warehouse. We worked with its new owner — the Minnesota Opera — and other performance and user groups to improve accessibility and functionality of the oft-used community space. The space now better addresses the needs and comfort of more performers, technicians, audiences, and staffers.
