Hillside Kitchen Revival
For a family that connects over a shared love of food, this small kitchen revival felt anything but trivial. Designed to be the hub of the home, this kitchen needed to be a functional cooking space that brought people together and encouraged a sense of place through food and dining.
Hillside Kitchen Revival
For a family that connects over a shared love of food, this small kitchen revival felt anything but trivial. Designed to be the hub of the home, this kitchen needed to be a functional cooking space that brought people together and encouraged a sense of place through food and dining.
As part of this, the rear entryway was also expanded to offer a more defined, covered entrance for the family to use year-round. The design of the addition and renovation strived to maintain the original, historic nature of the house and to reiterate a sense of place by seamlessly integrating the kitchen and back entry in a way that enhanced their home’s existing character.
As the kitchen revival aimed to minimize disruption to the historic character and charm of the house, distinguishing interior elements such as molding that continues from the dining room into the kitchen as well as matching trim to connect the updated space with existing wood in the home were incorporated into the overall design. Exterior elements also intentionally reflect the home’s surroundings. Situated at the base of an historic neighborhood water tower, the unique, steep lot made construction challenging. The team sought to keep the site as similar to its original character as possible. The exterior of the house was appointed to fit the historic style of the neighborhood and house through key features including exposed rafter tails, soffit details, and stucco.
Reflecting the owners’ overarching vision of home, the renovation has made the kitchen a central element of daily life. The reconfigured rear walkway connecting the kitchen and deck encourages flow, further enhancing the family’s idea of home with food at its core. This remodel truly embodies the concept that the kitchen is the heart of the home.
