Prairie Place

Unbuilt

Nestled on an idyllic landscape scattered with wildflowers and grasses, this home is designed to fit effortlessly into its natural surroundings. The originally scouted lot was perfectly tucked into a wooded area that offered both privacy from surrounding walking trails and neighbors along with long, clear views of the prairie. At the time, the clients needed a long-term home for their family to grow into. They wanted to enjoy the space for years to come, including when they’d eventually become empty nesters. They imagined the house being shared with family and friends for seamless entertaining and living.

The couple envisioned a modern farmhouse that would compliment the beauty of the landscape and connect inhabitants to the site while providing the necessary accommodations for hosting guests and their growing family. Since the lot was clear of trees and other impediments, the house could be perfectly sited with an accompanying swimming pool and sun deck for indoor-outdoor gatherings. Inside, the main volumes of the home are organized with a balance of private and public spaces to maintain privacy and functionality for when the house is used for entertaining.

From both the interior and exterior, the design’s most striking features are the breezeways that link the three main volumes of the home and offer unobstructed views of the landscape. Connection points between each breezeway provide sunlight and direct sight lines to the prairie through large windows. The links themselves connect the primary suite to the kids’ rooms, the kids’ rooms to the main living space, and the main living space to the mudroom and laundry – collectively emphasizing flow and connection between different areas of the home. Overall, this retreat offers a peaceful backdrop for a family to live, grow, and host all while honoring the natural beauty of the site.
