The owners of this traditional story-and-a-half Minneapolis home envisioned a primary gathering space for cooking and hosting that would seamlessly connect to an idyllic backyard retreat. The goal: Create the perfect indoor-outdoor entertaining hub.
Consideration was given to user access to interior and exterior arrangements that would encourage social gathering and places of refuge deeply integrated with nature. Reusing the existing structure of the home was another a priority to ensure the new addition would complement the style and scale of neighboring houses. Efficient use of space was also a primary concern to ensure right sizing for both the family’s needs and the neighborhood’s context.
This custom residential design features an addition that increases the main volume of the home which created an opportunity to expand the kitchen and dining areas while opening up space for a new, second level owner’s suite. The upgraded kitchen now features a large accordion window over the sink, increasing connection between indoor and outdoor. A recessed, covered walk-out deck off the bedroom above provides privacy from nearby neighbors and an additional connection to the backyard oasis below, all while maintaining the appropriate scale and charm of this Minneapolis home.
